Compression Impressions
The Ride2Raise Ride Managers have been suggesting we do a piece on compression wear for some time as it’s said to have great benefits for endurance riders. But what should we test from the huge range of products and manufacturers now active in what was once a small niche market? Their answer was unanimous: 2XU.
For this review we looked at the 2XU Compression Race Sock and the 2XU Compression Sock for Recovery. The Race Sock is said to aid blood circulation for faster flushing of lactates, improve oxygen circulation and reduce muscle vibration. It can be worn during training or racing and helps counter muscle fatique by stabilising muscles in the lower leg, while channelling air and wicking moisture. It’s also a sock of course!
The Race Sock was comfortable and well fitted (the 2XU size chart was accurate) and there was a definite feeling of lower leg stability while on the bike. More noticeably, after riding there was a significant reduction in aching from the calf and achilles tendon areas than is the norm for this reviewer.
Of course, it was now the moment for the Compression Recovery Sock to step forward. 2XU claim less ventilation and more compressive power for better recovery with fast flushing of lactates and improved circulation. And again we noticed a real difference, with quicker immediate recovery, and then less stiffness the next day. So both socks were a success as far as we’re concerned.
We’re not scientists and can’t test all the claims that 2XU and other manufacturers make for compression wear, but if it’s about how a product makes you feel, then these 2XU compression socks are winners. And for anyone contemplating a serious, multi-stage charity event, we’d recommend including at least a couple of pairs of in your clothing inventory.
